The World’s Worst Poet

Posted by deborah

An interesting tidbit:
The late 19th century poet’s [William McGonagall] work is so bad he carried an umbrella with him at all times as protection from the barrage of rotten tomatoes he faced wherever he recited.

What Does Your Handwriting Teach You?

Posted by deborah

I’m not sure which poet said that, for her, writing is a physical process. She had to feel her arm and hand doing the work of the writing and the thoughts came from her mind down her arm and into her hand.
An article about children and handwriting reminded me of that quote.

Just Write

From Elizabeth Gilbert’s web site:
Her essay mentions that she did not get a MFA. Instead, she took a series of odd jobs on ranches and in restaurants and kept writing and showing her writing to people. That reminded me of the debate that seems never to die: “Should You Get the MFA or Not”? That […]

Grealy was most famous for her […]

Do Blogs Count as Publication?

Posted by deborah

Reb Livingston had a blog post about whether poems posted on blogs count as being published. Cherryl Floyd-Miller responded on her blog and wrote that editors can’t have it two ways:

But the goddess Reb makes a good point. Those same publishers who reject us for having publised [sic] on a blog are often the same […]

Sharon Olds Says No

From Peter Pereira’s blog and from Buffalo Report…
Dear Mrs. Bush,
I am writing to let you know why I am not able to accept your kind invitation to give a presentation at the National Book Festival on September 24, or to attend your dinner at the Library of Congress or the breakfast at the White House.
