An interesting tidbit:
The late 19th century poet’s [William McGonagall] work is so bad he carried an umbrella with him at all times as protection from the barrage of rotten tomatoes he faced wherever he recited.

I’m not sure which poet said that, for her, writing is a physical process. She had to feel her arm and hand doing the work of the writing and the thoughts came from her mind down her arm and into her hand.

Last night, I finished Truth & Beauty by Ann Patchett. In this memoir, she writes about her friendship with the writer Lucy Grealy. Grealy attended the Iowa MFA program with Patchett, and they struck up a friendship there (at about age 21) that lasted until Grealy’s death at age 39.
