The State with the Beautiful Name

Posted by deborah

I’m in Florida today. I’ve downloaded local yoga schedules and made an appointment with a massage therapist for a deep tissue massage. Oh, I am looking forward to yoga and a massage. I’ve not had a week-long vacation in six months. I’ve not taken a yoga class in a long time and think it’s time […]

Rollcall

Posted by deborah

It’s been ages since I did a roll call. Here’s what’s happening in the poetry blog world:

Jeannine Hall Gailey starts a new magazine.
Find out where Amanda Auchter had poems accepted.
See what Collin Kelly has to say about Feist.
Kelli Russell Agodon wants your motherhood poems.

Casa Libre: Here I Come

Posted by deborah

I feel like Eduardo “Colony Hopper” Corral! I’m headed to Casa Libre. The place has a pool and hot tub! Just look at this writing studio.
Whee!

In other news, Dale Young told me all about frequent flyer miles several years ago. Before our conversation, I was so naive! He told me I had to get my […]

I Always Wanted to Write About Fugu Fish

Posted by deborah

and now Aimee went and did it.
In “Fugu Soup Blues” for example, the reader’s introduced to the toxic porcupine fish, “the only fish/ that can close its eyes.” But the poem moves beyond reportage of facts and into the terrain of people’s attraction to risky behavior, i.e. the consumption of such a dangerous delicacy.

Someone just pointed out this essay to me.
Meanness, the very thing which is unforgivable in human social life, in poetry is thrilling and valuable. Why? Because the willingness to be offensive sets free the ruthless observer in all of us, the spiteful perceptive angel who sees and tells, unimpeded by nicety or second […]

Busy Weekend and Strawberry Parfaits

Posted by deborah

May 19th is the day for events. Our local pool is having a party, my town’s mother’s group is having an organizational meeting, we’re hosting a birthday/Mother’s day celebration for my mother, my colleague is having a birthday party at his house and my friend is having a bridal shower thrown for her. Phew! Good […]

Spring Cleaning

Posted by deborah

I gave a bunch of puzzles to a local teaching artist. She and the children at the local elementary school will make a collage with the puzzle pieces, and the resulting mural will be installed in the school for all time. I look forward to going over there to see it! Freecycle is a neat […]

Happy Mother’s Day!

Posted by deborah

DH made me the biggest omelette I’ve ever seen — with goat cheese, avocado, spinach, parmesan, and tomato. He garnished the edges of the plate with strawberries. I thought about taking a photo, but then O grabbed her fork and stabbed the biggest piece of goat cheese she could find after requesting ‘mommy lap, mommy […]

Reflections from a Residency with Amy Clampitt

Posted by deborah

I was searching for a photograph and found this intriguing bit from “In the Subtropics with Amy Clampitt” by Katherine Jackson.
Jackson writes about a residency she had with Amy Clampitt at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in northern Florida. At the end of the residency, Clampitt invited the composers to join the poets, and […]
