Negative Reviews, Etc

Posted by deborah

Allen Taylor writes about why we need negative reviews.

Tonight, I may get my ms from a friend. She double-extra-super-latte-proofread the entire book even down to the tiniest little detail. Phew. I am so happy to know someone with those kinds of talents!
Midnight Voices will soon be off to the publisher!

I’ve been spending a lot of […]

Poetry Contests: Does Age Matter?

Posted by deborah

Recently, I posted a prize announcement with an age limit of 40. Someone commented, “why 40?”
Well, what is so magical about that age? The Yale Younger Series requires entrants to be under 40, too. Of course, there are contests for people with one book already — we could assume they are over 40 since […]

Gnocchi and Poetry

Posted by deborah

Many moons ago, I ate lunch with my boss and our team. Back then, I was a vegetarian and ordered gnocchi at this excellent Italian restaurant near our office. The restaurant had a crackling fireplace and wooden beams zigzagging across the ceiling.
Out of nowhere — zap! — he asked me what my goals were.

Amazon and the POD Debate

Posted by deborah

The poetry blog world has been buzzing with POD publishers and bloggers talking about Amazon’s strong-armed tactics to get the little guy to use Amazon for POD printing. This would take business away from POD publishers and take money away from writers.
Reb Livingston and Shanna Compton are following the POD news rather closely, so I’ll […]

The Good Ol’ Girl’s Club

Posted by deborah

I’m about to start me a good ol’ girls club after reading this post from the worksinprogress blog.
Pulitzers announced. Not one woman in creative writing. What to make of that?
If you want to get really steamed, you can read Francine Prose’s article “Are Women Really Inferior?” at the Harper’s site in case you missed it […]

Border’s Books

Posted by deborah

In case you’ve not heard, Border’s is having financial woes. You may not care since they turned into a big-box store, but I always had a soft spot for the place since it started out as an indie shop in Ann Arbor oh-so-long ago.
A few of the reasons they are having trouble: Costco, Target, […]

Poetry Books that Will Probably Knock My Knickers Off

Posted by deborah

It’s poetry month, and I’m in search of knicker-knocking-off action.
My guess is that Paula Bohince’s Incident at the Edge of Bayonet Woods will do the trick. And since we’re boycotting Amazon here at the 32 Poems blog, please buy this book straight from Sarabande Books.
Another book that I think I’ll like is Field Folly […]

I Judge Books by Their Covers

Posted by deborah

Gary Sullivan examines book covers and talks about what works — and what doesn’t.
Some of my favorite book covers have photos of the author on them. You can say the photo below of Sexton in a swimming pool does not have to do with the poetry, and that would be a fair criticism. What works […]

Which Poetry Books Knocked Your Knickers Off?

Posted by deborah

It’s the cruel month, everyone. It’s April and time to care about poetry.
Whether April as poetry month accomplishes what it set out to accomplish, I’ll never know. However, I do know that spring makes me want to read more. I’m ready to buy a whole load of books (mostly poetry) to last me through the […]
