What Words Do You Dislike Using in Your Poems?

Certain words drive me bananas. You all could use them, and it would not bug me a bit. However, these same words drive me nuts when I find them in my own poems. I use them too much. Here’s my list:

white;
just;
sky;
light.

How about you? What words do you find yourself using too often? I went through a phase of using ‘moon’ too much, but I think I’ve cured myself of that. =-)

  1. i use “torso” too much. and “pecking.”

  2. I find i use dark, blood, red, and sunrise or sunlight way too much! I went through a phase of writing ocean poems with the words ocean, crags, and waves…lol

  3. I’ve been overusing “body” and various body parts, especially eyes. Then again, given that my tattoos are a skull, a brain, and an eye, I guess it makes sense.

  4. Steve — With the general body theme, you’ve got a wide variety from which to choose.

    Serena — I’ve overused ‘dark’ myself!

    Eduardo — Hmmm…those are interesting compared to mine.

  5. I have too many!

    But “so” is one I use to often and i try to avoid anything ending with “ly”

  6. I use “light” here and there, definitely. I’m not a big fan of “soul.” Or the letter “X.”
