One of My Studio Spaces

I’m intrigued by where we create our work. A long time ago, I asked people in a variety of creative fields to let me know their most important tool. My favorite was a visual artist whose most important tool was his bike (so he could get away from mad bodega owners).

Today, I am sharing one of my writing desks. This desk belonged to my great-great grandfather.

I left the pile in to the left, because it’s honest. Under the papers is a small box with some 32 Poems files. On the top of the pile is some felt I’ll use to make O’s Halloween costume. She wants to be her transitional object — a black kitty cat with orange feet and paws.

  1. I spend a fair amount of time traveling and realized just now, reading your post, that it is harder for me to write poetry when away from a set poetry-writing place at home. Never connected those dots before — thanks!

  2. I wish I had a writing space, but in a one bedroom apartment with a dog, 2 cats, and a husband, I have to make do where I can.

  3. Serena — When I lived in a 1 BR, I relied on coffee shops a good deal. My desk was a door back then. =-)

    Nic — Glad to help…

  4. I find myself writing my poetry usuall in many different places. Most of the time I have a hard time finding my muse at my usual locations. If I take a bus ride, go to the park or just get out I find that I have more creative energy, which is why I like to keep a note pad with me.

  5. I note you also have a lamp on it that casts a warm, comforting light. When I’m writing, the light in a room is probably more important than the desk I’m sitting at.

  6. Kelly, That makes perfect sense to me. I write at my desk and all over town.

M.C., A light can make all the difference.
