Church of the Cherry Tomato

My friend, H, is the Information Queen. She told me about the Washington Green Grocer, which delivers organic (or a mixture of organic and non-organic) foods right to your door. I forgot the name of the place for a year or so, remembered it and finally signed up this evening.

One of the reasons I decided to get a green grocery delivery is because of a cherry tomato.

We order food from a suburban farmer — she grows our food in her back yard — and I tasted a cherry tomato of hers and was out of my mind. The flavor! It actually had flavor. Grocery store food is so disappointing by the time it travels half the world to get here.

“More, more,” is about all I could think after eating J’s homegrown cherry tomatoes. The next week, I attempted to order more and the other customers had bought up all the food! Those stinkers, right?

So, I decided to widen my scope and order from more than one place.

J also grew some delicious beets. I always thought beets were disgusting, and I ordered some to see if I still thought that. I was wrong. And I can’t help thinking a recipe of steamed beets, pine nuts and goat cheese drizzled with olive oil would taste spectacular.
