Amy King and Reb Livingston gave me the idea to create a holiday gift guide of…poetry. Why not?

Why not give poetry to everyone on my holiday list?

This is Reb’s Crucial Rooster poetry book list. Below is the start of my list. I’ll come back with more soon.

I’m not going to say the Death of Poetry is near. What I am going to say is that you out there. You poet. Buy your friends and family some poetry. Let them know a bit about what you do. Get them interested in something they might not have experienced before. Show them poetry does not have to be “scary.”

If you have your own recommendations, write them in the comments below.

FOR MY SISTER:
Brigit Pegeen Kelly’s Song: The “goat poem” will get her.

FOR MY IN-LAWS:
I’m guessing they’ll like Jack Gilbert’s Refusing Heaven. Romantic. Straightforward.

FOR MY MOTHER:
This is a tricky one. My mother only recently let me know that she “understood” some of the poems in 32 Poems. She really liked Andrea Hollander Budy’s poem, so I think I’ll get her The Other Life by Budy.

FOR MY FATHER:
Wow, this is really tricky. I think he’d probably like Julianna Baggott’s Lizzie Borden in Love: Poems in Women’s Voices.

Of course 32 Poems is a great gift for people, too!

I’ll be back with more books for my holiday shopping list.
